Knitted Windbreak –
Integrating Function and Beauty
The KnitWind project, featuring full-scale prototypes, builds upon previous research at Chalmers University of Technology. There, the potential of knitted fabrics as windbreaks was investigated through wind tunnel studies and form experiments.
The first prototype, KnitWind-1, is now installed on The Terrace at Clarion Hotel® Malmö Live. It marks the first real-world test where theory and insight from previous research are put into practice. Knitted from hemp yarn — a biodegradable material — the structure moves gracefully in the wind, creating a living installation that evolves with light and weather conditions.
The project has been made possible with support from Chalmers Innovation Office and is a step forward in integrating knitted textiles into urban spaces to improve wind comfort and enhance architectural expression.
